The Topolná transmitter is a long wave transmitter in the Czech municipality of Topolná (German: Pappelsdorf). The transmission system, which uses vertical traps as an antenna on two grounded steel truss masts 257 meters (with a top 270 meters), went into operation in 1952 and operates on the frequency of 270 kHz with a transmission power of 50  kilowatts .

history

The transmission system was built from 1950 to 1951 and originally used two Tesla DRV 200 transmitters each with 200 kilowatts, one of which was switched several times to 173 kHz to act as a jammer for the Voice of America broadcasts from the transmitter on the same frequency Act erching . Switched on for the first time on December 22, 1951, regular operation on the frequency 272 kHz began two months later on February 20, 1952. Since the area of the former Czechoslovakia was primarily to be served, two transmission masts were erected with one direction of radiation Enable east and west. In the early days, the long-wave transmitter was called Topolná Ceskoslovensko 1 , the exact transmitter location was unknown for a long time.

In its early days, the long-wave transmitter broadcast the program Praha-II , which was broadcast in the Czech and Slovak languages and later called Ceskoslovensko , and from 1970 onwards Hvezda (Czech) and Hviezda (Slovak) (German star).

In 1972 the Czechoslovak government passed Resolution No. 228, which provided for extensive modernization of the transmitter in Topolná . Between 1975 and 1978 new transmitters and modulation lines were installed for 70.4 million Czechoslovakian crowns . In order to enable listeners to continue receiving the radio program during this work, some medium-wave transmitters were switched to 272 kHz for a transitional period until the Topolná transmitter was put back into operation on November 15, 1978 with two new Tesla DRV 750 transmitters took. These two transmitters, each with an output of 750 kilowatts, were connected to form 1500 kilowatts.

As part of the Geneva Wave Plan , the station was retuned on February 1, 1990 from 272 kHz to 270 kHz.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and increased operating costs, the Topolná transmitter was to be shut down on December 31, 1993, but continued to operate after numerous listeners protests. Further shutdown attempts in January and spring 1994 were unsuccessful. Instead, the transmission power was reduced to 750 kilowatts from 1994, for which one of the two transmitters was taken out of service. At the same time, the duration of the broadcasts was limited to 5 a.m. to midnight.

On January 1, 2002, the transmission power was reduced from 750 kilowatts to 650 kilowatts, a further reduction is not technically possible.

Since the Radiožurnál program, which is now broadcast via longwave, is already sufficiently broadcast via VHF and operating longwave is associated with high costs, the long-wave transmitter was finally shut down on February 28, 2014 by the Český Rozhlas Broadcasting Council decided. At the end of February 2014 it was announced that the Topolnà transmitter would remain in operation for at least three more years. In order to save costs, the transmission power was reduced to almost 50 kilowatts, for which the anode voltage of the existing tube transmitter was reduced first. In the first quarter of 2014, however, a new transmitter was installed that works with exactly 50 kilowatts of transmission power. With the power reduction, the modulation processing was converted to dynamic compression. This caused the range of the long-wave transmitter to drop sharply. The newly installed longwave transmitter was already in operation from 1996 to 2000 on the Burg near Magdeburg transmitter on the frequency 261 kHz and was bought from Media Broadcast . The nightly shutdown of the transmitter was maintained even after the power reduction.

In October 2019, Český rozhlas brought up another switch-off attempt for January 2022.
