Serafino Balestra

Serafino Balestra (born October 6, 1831 in Bioggio , † October 26, 1886 in Buenos Aires ) was a Swiss priest , archaeologist and educator for the deaf .

Life

He was the son of Giovanni Paolo Balestra, a tailor from Gerra (Gambarogno) . He attended the college of Somaskers in Lugano , studied theology at the seminary in Como and was ordained priest in 1856. He was a teacher at the seminary and at the diocesan high school, as well as canon of Como Cathedral . From 1860 he was rector of the College of Canossians founded in Como in 1852 .

From 1871 he was a member of the archaeological commission of the province of Como and an employee of the Rivista Archeologica . In this sense, in 1863, he dealt with the restoration of the Basilica Sant'Abbondio in Como. From 1865 he made great contributions to the education of the deaf. For his further education he traveled to Italy , after which he worked in France from 1874 to 1880 and received the Cross of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic in 1882 .

During this time he stayed frequently in England . He was called to Buenos Aires in 1885 as head of a school for the deaf. Today he has been buried in the Bioggio cemetery since 1964.
