The Serbian Orthodox Saint Nicholas Church in Szeged is located on the Tisza in southern Hungary .

History of the church

The older church, located in the upper town, was dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel . The church was built on the foundations of a church from the Turkish period, as is evident from the church chronicle or the founding letter ( Tevter crkveni ) from 1727, while the church birth records have existed since 1744.

During the great flooding of Szeged in 1879 this church was badly damaged and soon demolished. The present and only Serbian church in Szeged is located in the former suburb of Palanka and is dedicated to St. Nicholas . It was built in two phases: First, a smaller church was built in 1732. In 1762 an attempt was made to build a stone tower at this church, but it was unsuccessful due to the lack of necessary permits. Ten years later, after the Serbian community had strengthened itself and with donations from wealthy traders, the building of today's church became possible. Construction began in 1773. Five years later, in 1778, the roof of the church was finished. The main builder was Joanes Dobić. The tower was completed in 1781. Two German masters built the tower and Mihajlo Sokolović, a master from Buda , decorated and gilded the tower. In 1781 five new church bells were consecrated. It took longer to decorate and furnish the interior of the church. It was not until 1805 that the church was consecrated by Bishop Jovan Jovanović. A memory of this is still kept in the altar .

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Nikolauskirche received rich gifts; you can still see that in the interior today. In 1879, during the catastrophic flooding, St. Nicholas' Church was also badly damaged. It was then restored in 1880 and 1881. The outside of the church is largely designed in the Baroque style with classicist elements.

Furnishing

In the church there is a magnificent icon wall ( iconostasis ). The lower part of the icon wall was painted by the Serbian Baroque master Jovan Popović in 1761. This icon wall was primarily in the forerunner of today's church. Later, after the larger church was built, the parish hired a second painter, unfortunately no longer known, to paint the remaining compositions of this special, partially built-up icon wall in the Rococo style . The entire icon wall was restored after the great flooding. On this occasion, in 1881, the painter Jovan Hodina painted the composition The Creation of the World on the vault of the church .

There are several icons of different periods and origins on the walls in the church . The oldest is a Russian icon, " The Divine Face of Christ " (The Robe of Veronica ), the work of a Russian master from the Rublev School at the beginning of the 17th century. On the south wall in the church there are two icons of the Holy Mother of God . They were taken away from the Serbian homeland by Serbs during the Velika Seoba (the great migration). The icon “ The Black Madonna ” from Egypt , the work of a Coptic painter, is unusual . Christ and the Mother of God then have black features. Two icons by the famous baroque painter Stefan Tenenski are also worth mentioning, including “ The Coronation of the Mother of God ”.

In the showcases there are old religious books and various objects from the liturgical celebration, such as incense barrels, blankets and church dishes.
