Serge Gruzinski (born November 5, 1949 in Tourcoing , Nord Département , France ) is a French historian and university professor .

Life

After graduating from the École nationale des chartes in Paris , Gruzinski attended the École française de Rome in Rome from 1973 to 1975 . Further studies took him to the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid . Since 1993 he has been research director at the Paris École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales . There he deals with the history of Latin America , his experiences in the time of colonialism and the developments in the mixing of cultures as preliminary stages of globalization .

Gruzinski was one of the 100 guests in the event series 100 Days-100 Guests at the 1997 documenta X in Kassel . He is a member of the editorial committee of the semi-annual anthropology magazine Gradhiva . He directed the exhibition Planète Métisse at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris .
