Sergei Nikolajewitsch Tschernikow ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Черников , English transcription Sergei Nikolaevich Chernikov ; born May 11, 1912 in Sagorsk , † January 23, 1987 in Kiev ) was a Russian mathematician who dealt with group theory .

Chernikov attended the Pedagogical Institute in Saratov to become a math teacher, studied at the Institute of Physics and Mechanics of the Urals and the Lomonossow University under Alexander Gennadjewitsch Kurosch . He studied the work of the Russian algebraists Dmitri Alexandrowitsch Grawe , Nikolai Grigorjewitsch Tschebotarjow and Otto Juljewitsch Schmidt and dealt with infinite groups and generalizations of concepts (like that of solvability) and theorems (like Frobenius' theorem) about finite groups on infinite groups. In 1940 he received his doctorate (Infinite locally resolvable groups). At that time he was head of the mathematics faculty at the Pedagogical Institute in Saratov. In 1946 he became head of the Mathematical Faculty of the Urals State University and in 1951 at the University of Perm. In 1961 he became head of the Algebra and Geometry Department of the branch of the Steklov Institute in Sverdlovsk . From 1965 until his death he was head of the algebra department of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and from 1967 he was a member of the academy.

In addition to infinite groups, he also dealt with finiteness conditions in group theory and with linear inequalities.
