Life

Schutzmann, son of a Moscow gardener and grandson of a German immigrant, studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , graduating in 1894 as a classified artist of architecture with a small silver medal for drawing and a large silver medal for architecture. He then studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg .

Schutzmann worked in Moscow from 1894 to 1902 as Lev Nikolayevich Kekuschev's assistant. With Kekuschew he rebuilt the T.-I.-Korobkow-Villa in 1894-1896 and 1899. In 1899 he was involved in Kekuschew's project for the construction of the Hotel Metropol (Teatralny Projesd 2) of the entrepreneur Sawwa Ivanovich Mamontov , who however commissioned William Walcot with the implementation. After Mamontov's bankruptcy and arrest, the new owners commissioned Kekushev with the construction. In 1899 he built the M. S. Saarbekow villa with Kekuschew. From 1899–1900, the policeman Kekushev carried out the project to build a series of Nikolskije trading houses. In 1901 he built the W. I. Grjasnow tenement house and won 2nd prize in the construction competition for the Papudow tenement house with Kekuschew and his brother Nikolai. Thus Schutzmann was one of the representatives of the Art Nouveau- based Moscow Modernism .

In 1902, Schutzmann became a member of the Moscow Architecture Society and lived as a self-employed architect in Moscow. 1902–1903 he built the right part of the corner house at Skatertny Pereulok 8, while the left part was built by Pavel Mikhailovich Samarin . In 1904, together with his brother Nikolai, in a joint project with Kekuschew and Konstantin Fjodorowitsch Burow, he built the House of the Ladies' Curatorium for the Poor of the Office for the Institutions of Empress Maria (Maly Kosichinski Pereulok 4). 1907–1912 Schutzmann built the R. I. Geste Villa (Uliza Spiridonowka 13). As a result of his blindness, the number of his own buildings remained small. His fate after the October Revolution is unknown.
