Sergio Costa (born April 22, 1959 in Naples ) is an Italian politician and former officer of the Carabinieri .

Costa, who does not belong to any party, has been the Italian Environment Minister in the Conte I and Conte II cabinets since June 1, 2018 .

Life

Costa studied Agricultural Sciences at the University of Naples Federico II . In 1987 he joined the State Forest Guard ( Italian Corpo Forestale dello Stato ). In 2005 he moved to the Provincial Police of the Province of Naples and was her commander until 2008. During this time he did a master's degree in environmental law in 2006 .

After returning to the state forest guard, he was appointed commander of the regional forest guard of the Basilicata region in 2009, before he took over the command of the forest guard of the province of Naples in 2012 and headed the forest guard of the entire Campania region from 2014 to 2017 . Since the dissolution and takeover of the forest guard in the Carabinieri in 2017, Costa has held the rank of Brigadier General of the Carabinieri. Until his appointment as Italian Minister of the Environment on June 1, 2018, he headed the department responsible for environmental protection of the Carabinieri (Italian Comando unità forestali, ambientali e agroalimentari ) in the Campania region.

Costa's name is closely linked to the fight against the illegal machinations of the so-called eco - mafia . So he uncovered the illegal disposal of toxic waste by criminal organizations in the provinces of Naples and Caserta , in the so-called Terra dei fuochi , in the early 2000s, including illegally operated toxic waste dumps in the Vesuvius National Park .

End of February 2018 was of he Luigi di Maio in the event of an election victory of the five-star movement in parliamentary elections in 2018 proposed as environment minister in the cabinet and as such I Conte in the government coalition with the Lega sworn in on June 1, 2018th As Environment Minister, threatening to resign, he pushed through a postponement of the further expansion of oil and gas production off the Italian coast called for by the Lega . The fight against plastic waste was another focus of his first term. To this end, the Italian government passed a law that allows fishermen to transport plastic stuck in nets onto land. Before that, they had usually returned plastic bycatch to the sea in order not to be reported for illegal waste transport. Fishermen who take part now receive an eco-label. In addition, free collection points have been set up in the port area. Costa described the fishermen as "fantastic allies" in the fight against plastic pollution in the oceans because they "know this environmental problem better than anyone".

After the coalition of the Five Star Movement and Lega broke, the non-party Costa was confirmed as Environment Minister in the Conte II cabinet in September 2019.
