Sergio del Valle Jiménez (born April 15, 1927 in Havana , † November 15, 2007 ibid) was a Cuban general and politician .

biography

After attending school, he studied medicine and then worked as a doctor in a hospital in Havana. In 1956 he joined a group of the revolutionaryMovement of July 26th ” led by Fidel Castro against dictator Fulgencio Batista . In July 1957 he joined the rebel army against Batista's troops in eastern Cuba as a doctor and soldier. In August 1958 he was one of the selected fighters who marched from the eastern Cuban Sierra Maestra in two units led by Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto "Che" Guevara to the province of Las Villas in the western half of the island, where they were important for the course of the war until the end of December Won battles. Del Valle was Cienfuegos ′ Deputy Commander of Columna Invasora No. 2 "Antonio Maceo" and kept a war diary published later. At the end of the war he was promoted to the highest rank of Comandante by Castro .

In 1968 he was appointed to the Council of Ministers and initially served as Minister of the Interior . He was the successor to Ramiro Valdés , whom he had already supported as First Deputy Minister. When Valdés was returned to head of the Ministry of the Interior in 1979, Del Valle moved to the post of Minister of Health , which he held until 1986 and which was his last public office.

In April 2001 he received the honorary title "Hero of the Republic of Cuba".
