Serhij Anatolijowytsch Leschchenko ( Ukrainian Сергій Анатолійович Лещенко , English Serhiy Leshchenko; born August 30, 1980 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a journalist and Ukrainian politician ( Petro Poroshenko Bloc ) and member of the Werchowna Rada since November 27, 2014 . In 2015 he was a lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in the journalism department .

Training and journalistic activities

Serhiy Leschchenko graduated from the Institute of Journalism at the National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev . He began his journalistic work in 2000 as a reporter in news programs for the Ukrainian television station Novyi Kanal (now part of Viktor Pinchuk's StarLightMedia group ) and also became a correspondent for the Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrajinska Pravda, which was founded in 2000 . In March 2001 he retired from Novyi Kanal. In 2002 he took up the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief at Ukrajinska Pravda . He became known for his investigative journalism , which he carried out in part with Mustafa Najem . Leschchenko also wrote for Opendemocracy.net.

In 2012 he completed a scholarship internship in the UK and became a Fellow of the John Smith Memorial Trust .

Political work and member of the Verkhovna Rada

It was part of a group of 28 Maidan activists who stood for election in Ukraine's parliamentary elections on October 26, 2014. At number 19 on the list of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc , he and his colleague Mustafa Najem (number 20) were sworn in as a member of the Verkhovna Rada on November 27, 2014. Leschchenko chaired the subcommittee on "International Cooperation and Implementation of the Anti-Corruption Laws of the Verkhovna Rada to Prevent and Combat Corruption in Ukraine".

On May 3, 2014, International Press Freedom Day , he was awarded the “Freedom of Information Heroes” award by Reporters Without Borders .

In March 2015, Leschchenko criticized the work of the Agency for the Modernization of Ukraine with the words: “From my point of view, Firtash's part is simply an attempt to restore his reputation and artificially create a basis for a discussion that he should not be handed over to the FBI but should return to Ukraine as a particularly valuable civil servant. "

In the 2019 presidential election campaign he supported Volodymyr Zelenskyj as an advisor.

Awards

In 2013, the news magazine Korrespondent placed him 55th on the list of the most influential people in Ukraine.
