The Sesachacha Heathlands Wildlife Sanctuary is a 875 acres (3.5 square kilometers ) comprehensive protected area on the island of Nantucket in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The sanctuary is located on the east coast of Nantucket and includes heathland as well as sandy meadows and green areas dominated by prairie grass ( Schizachyrium scoparium ), Myrica , bearberries and blueberries ( Vaccinium angustifolium ). The eponymous Sesachacha Pond is the largest brackish water lake on the island and attracts more than 300 different species of birds, including hen harriers and red chalk pods . There are 3 mi (4.8 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors.
