Seto no Hanayome ( jap. 瀬戸の花嫁 , dt "The Bride the Inland Sea, the bridal Seto".) Is one of Tahiko Kimura written and drawn manganese series . In a humorous way, it tells the story of Nagasumi, a student who threatens to drown during his summer vacation and is rescued by the mermaid Sun. However, events roll over after it is discovered that Sun is the daughter of the yakuza leader Gōzaburō. Since Sun's father would like to kill Nasagumi immediately, she is forced to marry Nagasumi so that her original rescue operation would not be in vain.

Seto no Hanayome was adapted as both an anime television series of the same name and a subsequent OVA release. Both anime productions were created in a cooperation between the animation studios Gonzo and AIC under the direction of Seiji Kishi .

action

A summer excursion by the protagonist Nagasumi Michishio and his parents to a bay in the Seto Inland Sea , where his grandmother lives, serves as the beginning of the plot . While Nagasumi can't really enjoy the vacation at all, he tries to pass the time in the water. However, since he cannot swim well and has a cramp, he threatens to drown unnoticed. Already almost passed out, he is rescued by the mermaid Sun Seto and found some time later by the father who is looking for him. However, his father and the rest of the family don't buy the mermaid story from him. That changes suddenly when Sun suddenly stands in front of the family's front door that evening and asks to be allowed to marry Nagasumi. However, the mixture of shock and amazement quickly turns into pure shock when Sun's father, in turn the leader of the Yakuza- Soo group, and his followers abduct the family members into the underwater world.

Together with her mother Ren, Seto succeeds in preventing her father from killing Nagasumi and his parents. After all, the code does not allow the family to kill the groom. The vacation can apparently continue normally, if it weren't for Sun's father, who never misses an opportunity to see Nagasumi after his life. Especially since almost all residents of the place are somehow connected to the yakuza group and also Sun's bodyguard, the extremely small and only outwardly polite Maki , always chase after him when Sun is not around. Accordingly, he can hardly find a minute of quiet while on vacation, because after all he is also confronted with Sun's peculiarities as a mermaid. Sun's legs turn into a fish fin when they come into contact with water, which must not be seen by anyone, or she reacts with singing to ward off danger. The latter is more of a deafening scream and in no way spares Nagasumi's ears.

When the vacation comes to an end, however, and Nagasumi is already looking forward to getting rid of all the stress, Sun also decides to follow him home. He wouldn't really have any objection to that if it weren't for the Seto group, which travels behind as hand luggage, as their father can of course never take their eyes off them. The rest of the school life is correspondingly chaotic. Nagasumi's childhood friend Mawari Zenigata, who is also the daughter of the police chief, forms a strong antithesis, while his school friend Hideyoshi Sarutobi draws attention to himself primarily through nonsensical actions, at the end of which Nagasumi repeatedly appears as the culprit. To top it all off, Lunar Edomae and Kai Mikawa join in the process. Lunar is also a mermaid and has been a rival of Sun since childhood. Accordingly, she is also targeting Nagasumi. Kai is the son of the board of directors of Mikawa Corporation and is extremely wealthy. At the same time he becomes a rival for Sun, since he assumes that Sun has promised him the marriage.

So the plot increases steadily and is expanded by other characters. What they all have in common is that they cause nothing but problems for Nagasumi, who always has to suffer from a wide variety of constellations.

Characters

Nagasumi Michishio ( 満 潮 永 澄 , Michishio Nagasumi )
As the protagonist of the plot, he is apparently the only normal person and is constantly confronted with attacks and dangers emanating from the other characters. Over time, he almost gets used to these circumstances and he develops great talent at avoiding attacks or surviving them through sheer tenacity.
Sun Seto ( 瀬 戸 燦 , Seto San )
She is a young mermaid and at the same time the daughter of the leader of the Yakuza Seto group. Basically, she is always kind-hearted and believes in the family's code of honor, whereby she keeps lumping the words ninkyō ( 任侠 , dt. "Chivalry") and ningyo ( 人魚 , dt. "Mermaid") into one pot. Since falling in love with Nagasumi, she has tried to help him in all possible situations. However, she is always quickly distracted, prevented by her characteristics as a mermaid or makes decisions that only make it worse. Aside from the fact that their legs turn back into fish fins upon contact with water, their singing is their most powerful weapon. Her scream can destroy entire houses, but if used correctly it can bring all kinds of things to sleep or give Nagasumi superpowers.
Lunar Edomae ( 江 戸 前 留 奈 , Edomae Runa )
Lunar has been enemies with Sun since she was a child, as Sun had managed to impress the audience with her singing more than she ever was able to, no matter how hard she tried. Since then, Lunar has evolved and has become a well-known pop star. Correspondingly, in everyday school life, which divides the school into three camps (the male followers of Sun, the male followers of Lunar and the female followers of Mawari), there are always arguments with Sun and finally also for the favor of Nagasumi, whom she initially regards as her subject. She is the daughter of the Edomae family, which in turn is also a yakuza group.
Mawari Zenigata ( 銭 形 巡 , Zenigata Mawari )
She is the daughter of the local police chief and is always overzealous in order to maintain order. She is secretly in love with Nagasumi and upset that Sun is now by his side. In the same way, they are in stark contrast to the Yakuza families. Over time she discovers the secret of Sun, which Nagasumi has always tried to keep by all means. But out of friendship with Sun, she decides to keep quiet about it or simply not to look.

The manga series Seto no Hanayome , written and drawn by Tahiko Kimura , was published by Square Enix in Gekkan Gangan Wing magazine in the September 2002 to May 2009 issues. The first 14 issues appeared on the Gangan Wing Comics label , the last two on the Gangan Comics Joker label .

In addition, a special volume was published in July 2007 called Seto no Hanayome Sakura: 2-nen 1-gumi Ninkyō-sensei ( 瀬 戸 の 花嫁 桜 2 年 1 組 任侠 先生 ; ISBN 978-4-7575-2040-0 ).

Adaptations

Anime

Based on the manga, the anime television series Seto no Hanayome of the same name was created in a joint production of the animation studios Gonzo and AIC under the direction of Seiji Kishi . The first broadcast of the 26 episode series began on the night of April 2, 2007 (and thus on the previous television day ) on TV Tokyo and ended on October 1, 2007. At the same time, but with a delay of one day to one week, as well as the transmitter beamed TV Aichi , TV Osaka , TV Setouchi from the series. The first broadcast on AT-X began on May 10, 2007. Here, however, the 17th episode was not shown because there were concerns that some of the characters used in the episode would look too similar to the originals of other, partly parodied works.

Outside of Japan, the series was licensed by Funimation (still Funimation Entertainment at the time of licensing) for the English-speaking world. In Australia and New Zealand, Madman Entertainment was responsible for the publication. The series was also broadcast on the Spanish channel TV3 and offered on DVD by Arait Multimedia. The series also appeared in Tagalog in the Philippines and in Chinese in Taiwan.

music

The opening credits were accompanied by a short version of the title Romantic summer . It was interpreted by Sun & Lunar and their spokespersons Haruko Momoi and Sakura Nogawa. The title was written and composed by Halko Momoi. The single of the same name, Romantic Summer, was released on April 25, 2007 and reached 32nd place in Oricon's Japanese charts . The single was also titled Namida Ichirin ( 涙 一輪 ) and, as usual, both were included again in an instrumental version.

A peculiarity of the opening credits was that it changed slightly from episode to episode. So behind Sun, the characters danced who were also of greater importance in the current episode.

The series used two different credits. The former (episodes 1–13 and 26) was entitled Asu e no Hikari ( 明日 へ の 光 ), which was sung by Asuka Hinoi . The piece was written, composed and arranged by Yugo Sasakura. The eponymous single Asu e no Hikari was released on May 2, 2007 and also contained the title VOICES and Kimi ga ita Basho on the B-side . An instrumental version of all three pieces was also included. The single reached 56th place in the Oricon charts.

Like the opening credits, the first credits, which actually only consist of a still image, have changed. He showed the Seto family eating together, and the room was filled with more characters, who appeared for the first time in the following.
