The Severn River is a river in northern Ontario , Canada.

It has its source near the western provincial border of Ontario. The Severn River has a total length - measured from the source of the Black Birch River - of 982 km and a catchment area of 102,800 km², which extends to a small extent over Manitoba .

The river has its origin in Deer Lake. From there it flows in a northeasterly direction to Severn Lake and on to Hudson Bay , into which it flows at Fort Severn . The First Nation settlements of Sandy Lake and Bearskin Lake and Fort Severn are along the river. These were built on the site of earlier trading posts. At that time the Severn River was an important fur trade route .
