Sex Education Atlas

The Sex Education Atlas. Biological information on human sexuality was a West German textbook for sex education . It was published in June 1969 on behalf of Käte Strobel , Federal Minister for Health , and was published by the Federal Center for Health Education . The order was given to the CW Leske Verlag in Opladen . A year earlier, in 1968, the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs had presented for the first time transnational “Recommendations on Sex Education in Schools”. In the GDR , sex education had been part of the curriculum as part of biology classes since 1947 under the title “Reproduction” .

The atlas comprised 48 pages, which were divided into twelve chapters. It covered topics such as the genital organs , fertilization and pregnancy . Ethical, social or emotional aspects were not dealt with. Critical topics such as homosexuality and masturbation were left out. The cover design came from the artist Gernot Bubenik .

criticism

The state ministries of culture reacted skeptically. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher criticized the book: "I would not give my 14-year-old daughter in the hand". Among other things, the naturalism of the representations was criticized .
