Shatrunjaya ( Gujarati : શત્રંજય; Hindi : शत्रुञ्जयपर्वतः) is a chain of hills up to 600 m high in the southeast of the Kathiawar peninsula in Gujarat , India . The name translates as "place of victory against internal enemies".
location
The chain of hills of the Shatrunjaya Hills is located approx. 2 to 10 km south or southwest of the city of Palitana, which is only approx. 65 m high . There are more than 100 medieval and modern Jain temples on several peaks .
Ascent
The hill can be climbed via approx. 3500 steps; Allow at least one morning for the ascent, the visit and the way back.
Religious meaning
Mountains were probably already worshiped as the seat of the gods in Vedic times . From there came the water that collected in streams, rivers and lakes and was necessary for the life and survival of plants, animals and people. It was above all the followers of the Jain religion who worshiped their “ford preparers” ( tirthankaras ) there and built temples for them (see also Girnar , Mount Abu , Parasnath and others). Another form of cultic worship is the approx. 215 km long walk ( parikrama ) of the entire chain of hills.
