The Shaw River is a river in the Pilbara region in the northwest of the Australian state of Western Australia .

geography

The river has its source on the northern slopes of the Chichester Range near the settlement of Emu Springs and flows north through the hill country. It has a wide flood plain with many islands, including Long Island and Rocky Island . Its course to the north continues through the Gorge Range and flows immediately south of the Great Northern Highway , about 20 kilometers west of the ghost town of Goldsworthy and 50 kilometers east of Port Hedland , in the De Gray River .

The Shaw River does not have water all year round, only in the rainy season . During longer droughts, the water can be absent for up to four years in a row. The water quality in the river depends on the water level. The average salinity is 110 mg / l and the average turbidity is 78 NTU.
