Shelby is a city in Richland County in the US state of Ohio , northwest of the city of Mansfield . It is statistically part of the Mansfield metropolitan area. The population was 9,821 at the 2000 census.
history
The area of today's Shelby was already inhabited by the indigenous people of America, the Indians. Including the Shawnee , Delaware , Mohicans and Wyandot .
In April 1818, the first settlers, Stephen & Sarah Marvin and their mother, Deborah Moyer from Connecticut, arrived in what is now Shelby.
In 1826 the first post office opened, called Gamble's Mill Post Office . It was named after a horse-powered mill that was located nearby. On June 26, 1834, James Gamble proclaimed the town of Shelby. He named the city after Isaac Shelby , a veteran of the Revolutionary Wars and the War of 1812 and the first governor of Kentucky .
In 1846 Shelby was connected to the railroad network, the Sandusky, Mansfield & Newark Railroad (now Ashland Railway ).
In 1853 Shelby was officially granted parish status. First Mayor is William Hiles.
On July 4, 1898, the Main Street Bridge collapsed in Shelby. 7 people were killed and 400 injured as a wedding ceremony was taking place on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
In 1921 Shelby was granted town charter.
