The Shell refinery in Ingolstadt was a refinery of Deutsche Shell AG in Großmehring near Ingolstadt in Bavaria. Due to overcapacity in the refining sector, the refinery was shut down on July 31, 1982.
location
Today there is a large industrial area called Interpark on the factory premises. Erlhof Castle and the Köschinger Bach are right next to the former factory premises , while the Gunvor refinery in Ingolstadt is only a few hundred meters to the west.
history
Five refineries set up shop in the Ingolstadt area in the 1960s, including Shell near Großmehringen. The construction of the refinery was completed in November 1963 and production could start. Shortly before the official opening, on December 1, 1963, a major fire broke out in the refinery. However, the fire caused by a burst pipe only caused minor damage to the process equipment.
From the late 1970s onwards, the refinery became increasingly unprofitable due to excessive refining capacities on the European continent. An investment in a 200 million DM expensive cracker was spared by the Group, which is why the profitability of the plant continued to deteriorate. Finally, in the fall of 1981, it was announced that the refinery would be closed for the following year. The plant was shut down on July 31, 1982.
At the end of July 1989 the site was bought by Terreno, a subsidiary of Hypovereinsbank, and the Interpark business park was created.
Technical specifications
The refinery was connected to the rail network via a branch of the Ingolstadt – Riedenburg railway , to which the Gunvor refinery and the Ingolstadt power station are also connected. The refinery was supplied with crude oil via the Transalpine Oil Pipeline and the Central European Line .
