Shemaryahu Talmon

Shemaryahu Talmon (* 1920 in Skierniewice , Poland as Shemaryahu Zalmonovitch ; † December 15, 2010 in Jerusalem ) was Judah L. Magnes Professor of Biblical Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Life

Shemaryahu Talmon grew up in Breslau and attended the Jewish Reform Realgymnasium there. In 1939 he was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp for three months , after which he was able to emigrate to Palestine .

In 1955, after studying with Umberto Cassuto , Isaac Leo Seeligmann and Paul Kahle, he received his doctorate at the Hebrew University with a thesis on the text and the versions of the Tanach , especially on the "double meanings" of biblical texts. In the years that followed, he expanded and refined his theses and contributed to many areas of Bible study. He worked with Moshe Goshen-Gottstein and Chaim Rabin in the Hebrew University Bible Project and has chaired him since their death. He also conducted research in the field of sociology. He brought both research perspectives together, particularly with a view to Qumran . In 1975 he published his studies Qumran and the History of the Biblical Text and in 1989 the book The World of Qumran from Within .

He was responsible for many institutions and worked as a visiting professor around the world. In the winter semester 1981/82 he was visiting professor at the Institute for Jewish-Christian Research (IJCF) in Lucerne . He was the Dean of Haifa University and the Faculty of Human Sciences at Hebrew University. He was also rector of the University for Jewish Studies in Heidelberg from 1982 to 1984 (second founding rector).

In the interreligious dialogue he was the head of the international Jewish-Christian dialogue and worked with the World Council of Churches and the Vatican .
