The island of Sherbro ( English Sherbro (Island) ), also called Bonthe , is located off the coast of the West African Sierra Leone in the Atlantic . The main town of the island is Bonthe with about 9700 inhabitants at the eastern end of the island, which is also the main town of the Bonthe district of the same name .

history

The original residents of Sherbro are the Bullom-Sherbro . Between the rivers Sherbo and Mano (also Mannah), Gallinas or the Galinhas territory , with Fort Lomboko, was a base for the slave trade until the early 19th century . Joseph Denman (1810–1874), a captain in the Royal Navy , signed a contract with King Harry Tucker, the community leader of the Gallinas slave assembly center, in 1840 to stop the slave trade. When a son of the community leader arrested a washerwoman from Sierra Leone and a British citizen, Captain Henry Worsley Hill, the eldest son of Rear Admiral Henry Hill of Romsey (1772–1849) with the HM frigate Saracen carried out a sea blockade of Gallinas lasting several months . On landing to take in fresh water , Hill realized that the slaves had freed themselves and put the slave-factory manager , Mr. François, in irons. Hill suggested that the barracoons (slave quarters ) be burned down. 841 slaves were released, the slave traders were given free travel to Sierra Leone. The Spanish relator Tomas Rodriguez Buron sued Denman in a British court for damages for the occupation of Gallinas . The lawsuit was dismissed in 1848. In the early 19th century there was a British post here to combat the Atlantic slave trade . From 1815, former slaves were settled, and in 1861 the Freetown colony took over the island from the Bullom-Sherbro.

Two of the district's eleven chiefdoms are located on Sherbro : Dema (main town Tissana) and Sittia (main town Yonni), as well as the Bonthe Rural District with the city of Bonthe.
