Shindand (district)

The Shīnḍanḍ district ( Persian شین‌‌‌‌‌‌ډن‌‌‌‌‌‌ډ, formerly known as Sabzwār , سبزوار) is one of the 16 districts of Herat Province in western Afghanistan and is located in the southern part of this province. It borders the Adraskan District to the north, the Ghor Province to the east, and the Farsi District and Farah Province to the south and west . The population was 173,800 (as of 2012). The district center is the city of Shindand, which has a very active market area.

Shindand Air Base is located near the city. The main Herat - Kandahar road runs through the district. The Zerkoh Valley is in the district.

history

Its old name was Esfezar when it was still a small Iranian town, more like a village near the border with Afghanistan on the Iranian side. Notable historical sites in Shindand include Qala-Dokhtar and Qala Rustam-Zal.

ethnicities

In terms of tribal and ethnic groups, Shindand is one of the most diverse districts in Herat Province . About 60 percent of the population speaks Pashto and about 40 percent speak Persian ( Tajik , Hazara and aimaq people (Timuris and other sub-tribes) and Western Persians). There are also a few Baluch and Turkic peoples . The main languages ​​in the district are Pashto and Dari-Persian . Most of Herat's districts have significantly fewer Pashtuns .
