Shiprock ( Navajo : Naat'áanii Neez ) is a community and a census-designated place (CDP) in San Juan County in the US state of New Mexico and is part of the Navajo Nation . The place is named after the nearby Shiprock rock formation . The population of Shiprock was 8,156 at the 2000 census, covering an area of 41.1 km². The population density is 198.4 / km².
Shiprock is one of eight locations of Diné College , a tribal college, and also hosts the Northern Navajo Fair , held every October. The city is at an altitude of 1491 m. ü. M. at the intersection of US Highways 64 and 491 .
