Shivaree [ ʃɪvəˈɹiː ] is an American musical group.

In their songs, the band combines melancholy alternative pop / rock with alternative country and jazz elements. Shivaree's lyrics deal primarily with singer Ambrosia Parsley's past.

Shivaree is an old custom in the southern United States where the friends of a newlywed couple sing and make a noise on cooking pots on their wedding night until they are invited into the house for a drink.

history

Singer Ambrosia Parsley (born June 23, 1971 in Reseda, California) made her first appearance at the age of seven when she performed with a 99-member senior banjo band at a pizzeria in her hometown. When she was thirteen, she left home and traveled across the United States. Parsley met the guitarist Duke McVinnie and began to work with him. Together with him and keyboardist Danny McGough she founded the band Junebug . After being renamed Shivaree , the group recorded their first album. With I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head For Making Me Live In This Dump and the single Goodnight Moon , she achieved successes, especially in Europe. The success started when the single was used in a commercial in Italy. Here the single was number 1 on the charts for three weeks. The unusually long name of their first album comes from Green Acres , a US sitcom from the 1960s. In one episode, people gathered around a cow that had swallowed a radio and was playing a song with this title from its belly.

The second album, Rough Dreams , was released in 2002, but not in the United States due to disputes with their record company Capitol Records . At that time the band was about to break up.

In April 2004, Ambrosia Parsley started the Ambrosia Sings the News project on Air America radio . Once a week the singer summarizes the events of the past week in a short song. A single entitled 2004: The Year in Review - For Anyone Who Can Bear the Mere Thought was sold on iTunes . In the same year Quentin Tarantino used the song Goodnight Moon in the credits for his film Kill Bill - Volume 2 .

In autumn 2004 Shivaree released the EP Breach on the Zoe Records label , and the following year their third album Who's Got Trouble? .

The album Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs followed in 2007 . This only contained cover versions and a. from Michael Jackson 's Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough , R. Kelly 's Half On A Baby and Looks That Kill , originally by Mötley Crüe .
