Shorea obtusa is a species of the genus Shorea within the wing fruit family(Dipterocarpaceae). It is native to Southeast Asia .

description

Shorea obtusa grows as a tree up to 30 meters high . The trunk gives off a light yellow resin ( dammar ), the bark is heavily tannic .

The short-stalked and leathery leaves are ovate to elliptical or elongated and pointed to indented. There are small stipules present.

There are grape-like formed inflorescences, the five petals with a double perianth are sitting. The inner and outer sepals are different. The light yellow flowers have no nectar . The many, basal fused stamens are arranged in 3 circles. They are of different lengths in each circle, the innermost being the longest and the outermost being the shortest. The anthers are ciliate and with a hairy appendage. The ovary is constantly above a short stylus with a very small, capitate and shared scar .

Winged wing fruits with 3–5 multi-veined and green-red and brownish wings when ripe are formed.

Pollination is done by beetles .

Shorea obtusa is found in Cambodia , Laos , Myanmar , Thailand and Vietnam .

Taxonomy

Shorea obtusa was first published by Nathaniel Wallich in Numer. List [Wallich] n. 966, 1829. The first valid description was then made by Carl Ludwig Blume in Mus. Bot. 2 (1-8): 32 (t. 8), 1856, from which the valid name Shorea obtusa Wall arose . ex flower .
