The Showcircus (previously Circus Luna and Circus Francordia ) is a circus company in Germany. The circus gained wider notoriety after a passer-by was killed by a circus elephant .

history

According to the circus, it has existed since the 17th century. After expropriation by the GDR in 1960, the then owner Walter Frank moved to Rhineland-Palatinate, where the circus was reopened as Circus Luna in 1971.

From 2000 onwards, the Luna circus under the direction of Stefan Frank was the focus of the animal welfare organization PETA, which publicly criticized the elephant "Benjamin" (also called "baby") and two bears "being kept under poor living conditions". As a result, several demonstrations and online petitions were organized and criminal charges were filed against the circus. Representatives of the circus contradict the allegations. There was also no conviction.

On June 13, 2015, there was an incident with the baby elephant, who was released from her enclosure in Buchen in the Odenwald and killed a 65-year-old man. The exact circumstances could not be determined.

For a fresh start, the circus was renamed Circus Francordia in March 2015 and a few months later the Showcircus . The elephant was handed over to Safariland Stukenbrock and no wild animals have appeared in the circus since summer 2015.

As part of the judicial review, the ringmaster received a penalty order in October 2016 for 90 daily rates of 70 euros for negligent homicide.
