Hida Shuntarō ( Japanese 肥田 舜太郎 ; born January 1, 1917 in Hiroshima ; † March 20, 2017 in Saitama ) was a Japanese doctor .

Life

Hida Shuntaro was a doctor in the Japanese army and worked in 1945 in the Hiroshima Army Hospital . By chance - he had previously driven to another hospital about six kilometers away due to an emergency call - he survived the atomic bombing on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and was an immediate eye-witness to the event. Hida was one of the first medical professionals to describe the effects of a nuclear weapon explosion on the human body.

For many years, Hida treated atomic bomb survivors (known as Hibakusha ) and became the director of the Hibakusha Counseling Center. He also requested compensation from the United States government and advocated the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Dissatisfied with the US occupation authorities ( GHQ / SCAP ), which banned research into radiation diseases, he joined the Communist Party of Japan (CPJ). In 1955 he moved to Saitama Prefecture , opened a clinic in Gyōda and was later elected to the city council for the CPY.

In 1989, his report on the consequences of the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima was published as a book by Donat Verlag in Bremen .

In 2005, Hida was interviewed for the BBC documentary Hiroshima , which aired on the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing, and his experiences were reenacted in a dramatic reconstruction of the events. He was also for the documentary White Light / Black Rain by the US TV channel HBO interviewed.
