Siegfried Samosch (born March 1, 1846 in Breslau , † January 18, 1911 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and writer .

Life

Siegfried Samosch, born on March 1, 1846 in Breslau, attended the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in his hometown and then studied law and camera science. In 1868 he joined the Berlin City Court as an auscultator. During his studies he stayed in Breslau , Berlin and Paris . After passing the first state law examination in 1867, he went on a long trip to Italy . When the Franco-German War broke out , he was a trainee lawyer and volunteered. He was assigned to the Field Auditorium of the Second Cavalry Division. After the war he was employed at the Supreme Court and initially planned to pursue a diplomatic career. But then he received a call to the editorial staff of the National-Zeitung , to which he had belonged since April 1, 1873 as editor for Romansh foreign countries and as a permanent contributor to the features section.

He had already traveled a lot during his studies. Now he went to Italy, France and Spain almost every year and recorded his travel impressions in detailed descriptions and cultural images. His interest in Romance literatures was condensed in studies on Ariost , Macchiavelli and Aretino , but also in essays on contemporary Romance authors, some of whom he had met personally on his travels and whose work he advocated in Germany ( Frédéric Mistral , Salvatore Farina ). In addition to his articles for the National-Zeitung , he also wrote for the Deutsche Rundschau , the Illustrierte Frauenzeitung , Westermanns MONTHLY , the modern art , the present , the Bazaar , and the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung . For a number of years he was Berlin correspondent for the Journal des Débats and from 1893 he carried out this activity for the Journal de Genève. Samosch had been married to the former royal Prussian court opera singer since June 3, 1874. Their daughter Margarete later worked as a writer and translator. The family initially lived in Charlottenburg (Joachimsthalerstrasse 7/8), later in Ludwigskirchstrasse. 9a.
