Siegfried Valentin (born February 23, 1936 in Wallwitz , Guben district ) is a former German athlete from the GDR .

Career

The middle-distance runner turned on 9 August 1958 in Poznan with the national team, the GDR 4 × 1500 m world record on, on July 23, 1963 he achieved this in Potsdam yet again. On July 19, 1960, he set a world record in the 1000-meter run in Potsdam with a time of 2: 16.7 minutes, making him the GDR's first world record holder in a single discipline.

He was four times GDR champion in the 1,500 meter run : 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1964; In 1964 he also won the indoor title. Between 1958 and 1960 he set eight GDR records in the 800-meter run , 1000-meter run and 1500-meter run.

At the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964 , he was eliminated in the lead-up to the 1,500-meter run (1960: 3: 46.9 min; 1964: 3: 44.9 min).

In 1959 he was the winner of the World Student Games in the 800-meter run (1: 49.3 min) in Vienna.

Siegfried Valentin belonged to the ASK Vorwärts Berlin , where he was trained by Curt Eins . During his competition time he was 1.73 m tall and 63 kg. He practiced the interval training recommended by Ewald Mertens and propagated by Woldemar Gerschler as early as 1933 , which was enriched with Soviet periodization elements.
