Siegmund Keller

Siegmund Otto Keller , also Sigmund Otto Keller , Sigmund Keller or Sigismund Keller (born May 29, 1870 in Öhringen , † December 31, 1943 in Stuttgart-Sillenbuch ) was a German legal historian and librarian .

Life

Siegmund Keller came from a southern German family of scholars. His father Otto Keller was a classical philologist who became known for his research on Horace , his standard works on the animals of classical antiquity and his advocacy of Heinrich Schliemann's discoveries.

Siegmund Keller studied law, philology and history at the German University in Prague , where his father taught. In 1893 he was awarded a doctorate in Tübingen with studies on the Peace of Westphalia. phil. PhD. In 1894 he was called to Rome and worked there on the publication of the Vatican files for the Council of Trent . Inspired by medieval Rome and extensive study trips to Italy and Tunisia lasting several years , a work on canon law and German law was created, with which he completed his habilitation in 1904 at the University of Bonn .

From 1902 to 1911 he worked as a private lecturer and professor at the law faculty in Bonn and temporarily in Marburg. In 1912 he moved to Berlin and worked there until his retirement in 1935 at the Berlin State Library as Professor of Law and Library Councilor. This activity was only interrupted by a secondment during the First World War as a consultant in the Foreign Office and after the end of the war as a member of the Reich Compensation Commission .

Siegmund Keller was married to Anna Maria Pauline Braunstein on September 22, 1904 and had four children with her, including the dancer Guta Kemeny-Rudin and the physicist and journalist Marion Keller .

Keller's brother was the literary scholar Wolfgang Keller (1873–1943). His sister was the sculptor Clothilde Schaar (1874–1958).
