Włodzimierz "Wlodek" Gulgowski (born February 13, 1944 in Łódź ) is a Polish jazz and fusion musician (piano, arrangement ) and film composer.

Live and act

Gulgowski studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory . He first played in an amateur band with swing music and then worked with the Warsaw New Orleans Stompers , with whom the first recordings were made in 1963. In the same year he appeared at the international jazz jamboree in Warsaw as a pianist in the quartet of Zbigniew Namysłowski (with Czesław Bartkowski and Tadeusz Wójcik); he worked with this band in the following years ( Lola 1964). In 1965 he appeared together with other Polish jazz musicians in the film “Jazz from Poland” produced by Joachim Ernst Berendt (director: Janusz Majewski ), which was shown on German television.

Soon afterwards Gulgowski emigrated to Sweden, where he initially worked as a studio musician. Together with Namysłowski he founded the rock jazz project Pop Workshop there , which released two albums in 1973 and 1974 with Janne Schaffer , Mads Vinding and Ed Thigpen and Tony Williams ( Pop Workshop: Songs of the Pterodactil ). He also released several albums under his own name and accompanied pop singers like Maritza Horn with his orchestra. In 1974 Michał Urbaniak invited him to concerts in the USA; the albums Fusion III and Funk Factory were also created . Back in Sweden he founded the prog rock band Made in Sweden (with Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson ), with whom he explored the Mini-Moog and in 1976 released the album Where Do We Begin . He also worked with ABBA , for whose first records he arranged and worked as an instrumentalist in the studio; he can also be heard on albums by Sabu Martinez , Pekka Pohjola , Gabor Szabo , George Russell or Bengt-Arne Wallin / Nils Landgren .

In 1978 he began to work with the guitarist Al Di Meola , with whom he performed in many European countries and the USA. Occasionally he gave concerts in Poland, for example in 1984 at the Jazz Jamboree with the Latin Lover Band (with Hector Bingert, José Pérez and Jorge Sadi). Later he worked mainly as a film composer.
