Orphaned at an early age, Zerbst grew up with his uncle, the Saxon head stable master von Taube . This gave him a job as a page at the court of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony .

When his guardian, his mother's brother, died, Zerbst broke off his studies at the University of Wittenberg and occupied himself with the administration of his inheritance.

In 1639 Zerbst was appointed to the Outer Committee of Anhalt and eight years later he advanced to the Inner Committee of Anhalt . At the same time he was entrusted with the office of district administrator in 1647 .

In the same year, Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen accepted Siegmund von Zerbst into the Fruit-Bringing Society . The prince gave him the company name of Gemäß and the motto of blood purification . Zerbst's emblem was the Hindleuft red flower ( Cichorium intybus L. var. Album Alef ). Zerbst's entry can be found in the Koethener society book under the number 466. There you can also find the rhyme law, which he wrote on the occasion of his admission:

Roht Hindleuft is according to, as one reads in books,
The purification of the blood, as its strength shows:
The one who took me according to me was then announced
to indicate how much 'I am inclined
to the service of the fatherland, who is obliged to him
and it Faithful means that he does not bow to selfishness
and favor, so I want to keep myself
according to common facts and darbey.

In 1680 Zerbst was promoted to a sub-director of the Anhalt landscape .
