The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation ( SLBC for short ) is the only public broadcaster in Sierra Leone .

In addition to the mainly English-language program, there are also programs in Krio and the languages of the Temne , Mende and other ethnic groups in the country. SLBC is the only broadcaster in the country that broadcasts in these different languages. The two television programs and a radio program are broadcast from the broadcasting station on Leicester Peak near Freetown .

The SLBC is supposed to be financed by radio fees and charges from the mobile phone providers .

history

In 1934 the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) was founded as the first English-speaking radio station in West Africa . The broadcast of a television program began in 1963, before a nationwide broadcast in color began in 1978. The SLBS was practically non-existent from the beginning of the civil war in Sierra Leone .

On April 1, 2010, the existing public broadcaster Sierra Leone Broadcasting Services was dissolved after the “Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation Act 2009” was passed in September 2009. With the involvement of the United Nations Radio of the United Nations Integrated Office for Sierra Leone , the SLBC was founded, the first independent public service broadcaster in the history of the country. The official start of work for the SLBC was April 27, 2010, the 49th Independence Day of Sierra Leone. The establishment of an independent broadcaster has been called for in Sierra Leone for years and encouraged by, among others, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists .

According to the UN, the transfer of assets to the SLBC was completed on June 15, 2010. Among other things, the establishment received eight radio transmission facilities and three transmission studios before the UN mandate United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone expired at the end of September 2010.

Until June 30, 2010, 172 people worked temporarily for the SLBC. The so-called “Transitional Management Team” was entrusted with the appointment of a managing director. Until the end of June 2010, the Board of Trustees was entrusted with the management, which happened under the direction of the former information minister Septimus Kaikai .

In August 2010 Elvis GK Hallowell was appointed the new general director of the institution.

A two-day test transmission with DRM + took place in November 2010 .

Until 2012, the Deutsche Welle Academy, with the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , will carry out a three-year project to manage the transition process from a state tool to an independent media company.
