The model 168 is an open-top -Container- feeder vessel type of Sietas in Neuenfelde . With 52 ships built, the model is the shipyard's most successful product to date.

This type of ship was ordered and built in large numbers by various shipping companies between 2001 and 2008.

The 29 ships of the ice-reinforced type 168 are mainly used on European container delivery services, where they have become a standard ship due to the large number alone. In the Kiel Canal and the Baltic Sea, they are among the larger units of their kind. The last type 168 container freighter was delivered in June 2008. It was the Wilhelm of the Jens & Waller shipping company.

The twelve type 168a ships and the eleven type 168b ships are employed in various container services around the world.

The Maersk Flensburg (168a)

The ships of the type were built in different variants. The basic type 168 has ice class E3, which leads to a higher steel structure weight due to the ice reinforcement of the hull. Due to their operational area in cold regions, the 168 ships have a wheelhouse with closed bridge cams . The sub-type 168a does not have this high ice class, but has its own cranes and open bridge cams. The sub-type 168b also does not have ice class E3, but achieves a load-bearing capacity of around 120 tonnes due to its lower construction weight and was also built with open bridge cams. In addition, there is also the sub-type 168V, which is a subsequently extended variant of the type 168. All 168Vs were originally completed as 168s and were later extended to 149.14 meters, increasing the load capacity to 13,740 tons and the container capacity to 1,008 TEU . The hulls of all ships were assembled in section construction.

Two of the three box-shaped holds are open at the top. All cargo holds are equipped with cell guides for the transport of containers and the transport of dangerous goods containers. The tank ceiling is reinforced for stowing heavy goods . In addition, the ship is set up for the transport of extra-long and extra-wide containers of the most common special dimensions.

The ships are propelled by a four-stroke diesel engine of the type MaK 9 M 43, which acts on a controllable pitch propeller . The mooring and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster with 750 kW and a stern thruster with 450 kW power.

As a successor to the type 168, the Sietas shipyard developed the even larger Baltic Max Feeder Sietas type 178 , of which only six units were built.
