Sigehard (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigehard († February 12, 1166 or 1167 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1149 to 1166 or 1167 .

Münsterschwarzach before Sigehard

Sigehard was the eighteenth abbot of Münsterschwarzach Abbey. However, a men's monastery did not come into existence until the 9th century, previously a women's convent had lived in the building. To strengthen the newly built monastery, the new masters of the abbey, the Würzburg bishops , planned to introduce monastery reforms in Münsterschwarzach. In particular, the reforms of Gorze , named after a monastery in present-day France, should benefit the monastery.

The “Gorzer Zeit” of Münsterschwarzach began under the first ten abbots. It reached its climax under Abbot Egbert von Münsterschwarzach , who made the monastery a center of reform and also brought the renewals close to other abbeys. It was not until the beginning of the 12th century that the Gorz reforms were replaced by the renovations of the Hirsau monastery in the Black Forest. Abbot Dietrich came to Münsterschwarzach directly from this monastery.

Life

Nothing is known about the origin and the family of Abbot Sigehard. It is clear that he the post of chief monastery after the death of his predecessor Dietrich I took over. Abbot Sigehard was first handed down in June 1149. As the first recorded official act, the prelate had a stone sarcophagus built in 1151 , which was placed in the middle of the abbey church . He hid the remains of the Würzburg bishop Erlung , as well as the abbots Egbert and Burkard .

In addition, Sigehard also took care of the renovation of the monastic buildings. Shortly after his appointment, the construction of a Johanneskapelle over the gatehouse and a narthex in the area of the church itself began. The latter was probably consecrated on November 19, 1152 by Bishop Gebhard von Henneberg . The day of the abbot's death is dated February 13th by the Münsterschwarzacher Nekrolog . However, this information is incorrect, since Sigehard died on February 12 in the years 1166 or 1167.
