Pass systems in the Glemmtal

The pass systems in the Glemmtal are former road control systems in the west of the federal state of Salzburg . You are in the Zell am See district on the upper reaches of the Saalach , known as the Glemmtal . The Glemmtal is divided into the Vorderglemm valley ( the Vorderglemm ), which extends from the valley entrance in Maishofen to Saalbach , and the Hinterglemm valley ( the Hinterglemm ), which extends from Saalbach to the end of the valley. Various barriers were built here by the Archdiocese of Salzburg , primarily to prevent cattle smuggling into the Tyrolean district court of Kitzbühel and from there to Bavaria. Today the Glemmtal Landesstraße (L 111) runs here.

Pass Vorderglemm

The Vorderglemm pass (also called Spielberg pass ) was near the border with Tyrol on the Spielbach (the earlier name for the Saalach). The facility consisted of a pass building and a jump facility . An alpine pasture on Spielberg was first mentioned in a document in 1284 during a dispute between the Walchen and the Lords of Goldegg . During the Thirty Years War , Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron had this fortification expanded. There were two little scout houses in front of the facility.

In 1774 a sergeant , a corporal and two common soldiers served here. A corporal and three men had to patrol the Hennlab Pass. In the Franciscan cadastre from 1830 a square hill with a bastion at each corner is added, which represents the block house mentioned in 1661 on the Schanz im Glemb . In 1787 the palisades were rotten and in 1790 the log house was in such poor condition that the patrols could no longer use it as a shelter. When the building was sold in 1826, the description was:

“The completely bricked house in Saalbach, formerly the Spielberg pass, after which it is called a toll booth, which on the ground floor consists of two rooms separated by the vestibule, a small vaulted kitchen and pantry, then a cellar and two timbered chambers under the table. On the north side a small, timbered wooden hut and next to it the box of an existing but abandoned barn, a small kitchen garden fenced in with slats, which is attached to a 17 fathom long and one fathom high pass wall, which also falls to the buyer. "

- Zaisberger, Schlegel 1978, p. 122

The foundation walls of the ramparts should still be 18 × 21 m long. In front of it, trenches have been dug in the swamp. In 1898 a chapel and the Franz-Josefs-Jubilee monument were built at today's Spielberghaus (Spielbergweg 207).

Hinterglemm Pass

The Hinterglemm Pass (also called Hennlab Pass ) secured the crossing over the 1863 m high Hennlabjoch (near the Sonnspitze at 2062 m). Today you can take the Talschlussweg via the Eibing Hochalm from the rear Glemmtal to the Hochwildalmhütte in Tyrol or on to Aurach near Kitzbühel . In the 18th century, seven men were assigned to watch here, but they were housed in a nearby farmhouse. In order to save money, these were moved to Vorderglemm in 1774.
