Sigismund Gossembrot the Elder (* 1417 ; † January 31, 1493 in Strasbourg ) was an Augsburg humanist , businessman and mayor of the city.

Life

Sigismund Gossembrot came from an old patrician family in Augsburg. He studied at the University of Vienna in the 1430s and then lived as a businessman in Augsburg. He had intensive business relationships with the Fugger and Welser families .

Around 1450, Gossembrot in Augsburg became the center of a circle of humanists who had the monk and early humanist Sigismund Meisterlin (around 1435 - after 1497) write a newly conceived historiography of the city of Augsburg based on humanist ideas. Various copies of this chronicle with numerous illustrations have survived.

Sigismund Gossembrot was mayor of Augsburg in 1458 . From 1461 he withdrew to Strasbourg to the Johanniterkommende Foundation 'Zum Grünen Wörth' set up by Rulman Merswin , where he devoted himself to studying his private library and cultivated contacts with Alsatian humanists.
