Sigmund von Pernstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigmund von Pernstein (Czech Zikmund z Pernštejna ; * around 1437 ; † 1473 or later) was a Moravian nobleman. As a supporter of the Bohemian King George of Podebrady , he was captured by the opposing king Matthias Corvinus .

Life

Sigmund came from the Moravian noble family of the Lords of Pernstein . His parents were Johann von Pernstein and his first wife Barbara von Waldstein ( Barbora z Valdštejna ).

Like his father and his younger brother Wilhelm , Sigmund supported the Bohemian King George of Podebrady. Around the middle of the 1460s, his father gave him the Zubštejn castle together with the associated lordship. In 1467 he was captured by the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, who wanted to gain the Bohemian crown. Together with Jan von Koschumberg , he was taken to Brno and held there. The length of his imprisonment is unknown. Presumably he was released in 1469 at the latest, since his daughter Dorothea / Dorota was born in 1470.

As early as the beginning of 1470, Sigmund was captured again. This time he was held by the leader of the Grünberg Alliance, Zdeněk von Sternberg, at his headquarters in Polná . Even after the death of Georg von Podiebrad in 1471, Sigmund's father and brother Wilhelm did not succeed in getting Sigmund free. They supported the newly elected King Vladislav II , from whom they received certain rights over the monasteries in Oslavany and Tišnov in 1471 and 1472 . Although they provided money for the release of their son or brother, Corvin demanded that Wilhelm convert to his side and support his military projects, as well as probably converting to Catholicism. On November 14, 1472, Wilhelm signed a corresponding agreement in Ödenburg , which was linked to the release of his brother, who was to be released by February 2, 1473 at the latest. Corvin's adviser and later Olomouc Bishop Johann Filipec presumably campaigned for the release .

Sigmund, who was presumably in poor health from imprisonment, could not enjoy the freedom he had regained for long. He died in 1473 or later. His widow Elisabeth von Boskowitz continued to live with her young daughters at the Zubštejn Castle, which was assigned to her as a Wittum . After her remarriage to Linhard von Guttenstein ( Linhart z Gutštejna ) before 1476 , the castle fell back to her father-in-law Johann.
