Sigurd Evensmo (born February 14, 1912 in Hamar , † October 17, 1978 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer , screenwriter and film historian . He is considered one of the most widely read writers in Norwegian post-war literature .

Life

Evensmo grew up as the son of a railway official in Hamar. As a teenager he came into contact with the organizations Clarté and Mot Dag and became a member of the youth organization Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking of the social democratic labor party .

After graduating from high school, Evensmo became a journalist in 1930, first in his hometown Hamar, then in Arendal , in Drammen and finally in Oslo . During this time he wrote a play , Conflict , which was published in 1934, and the screenplay for Olav Dalgard's 1938 film Lenkene brytes. During World War II , Evensmo was active in the resistance movement and wrote for an illegal newspaper until he had to flee Norway .

After the end of the war he returned to Oslo and worked as a journalist for the newspaper Arbeiderbladet . In 1945 he also published the novel Englandsfarere , which is based on his own experiences during the war. The book received a lot of attention with its dramatic portrayals and was filmed in 1946 by director Toralf Sandø . Englandsfarere is sometimes considered to be the best Norwegian novel set in the time of the German occupation .

Between 1947 and 1951, published Evensmo the Grenseland trilogy consisting of the three novels Grenseland , Flaggermusene and Hjemover there. For this trilogy he was awarded the Critic's Prize. It is considered to be one of the main works of Norwegian post-war literature. Evensmo wrote numerous other fiction books.

In 1949 Evensmo, who was skeptical about Norway's accession to NATO , left the Arbeiterbladet newspaper. In 1953 he was involved in founding the newspaper Orientering , in which a non-alliance foreign policy was advocated. Until 1975 he was editor of the newspaper.

From 1952 to 1975 he also worked as a state film censor . Since he was also a filmmaker as a screenwriter, he became a central figure in the debate about Norwegian film censorship.

In 1967 he published Det store Tivoli , a standard work on Norwegian film history.
