The silver bearded grass ( Bothriochloa saccharoides ) is a species of the sweet grass family (Poaceae).
features
The silver bearded grass is a perennial, herbaceous clump plant that reaches heights of 60 to 130 centimeters. The mostly 15 to 30, sometimes more vine grapes are 2 to 6 centimeters long and each have 5 to 10 pairs of spikelets. The sitting spikelets are 2.8 to 6.5 millimeters long and have a 10 to 15 millimeter long awn . The stalked spikelets are not awned and 2 to 4 millimeters long.
The flowering period extends from July to September.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60 or 120.
Occurrence
The species occurs in the pampas from the southern United States across Central America to Brazil, Argentina and Chile .
Systematics
One can distinguish the following subspecies:
- Bothriochloa saccharoides subsp. americana Scrivanti : It occurs from the southern United States to Mexico.
- Bothriochloa saccharoides subsp. australis Scrivanti : It occurs in tropical South America.
- Bothriochloa saccharoides subsp. saccharoides : It occurs in Central America and the Caribbean.
