Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus cordata grows as a tree or grows in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -like than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber that reaches heights of 10 to 20 meters. The smooth bark is white, gray, green or yellow, often with green or purple spots. There are oil glands in both the bark and the marrow.

In Eucalyptus cordata , heterophylly is present. The opposite, sitting leaves on middle-aged specimens are ovate to round or heart-shaped, with entire margins and matt gray-green or silvery gray. The leaf stalks on adult specimens are narrowly flattened or channel-shaped. The monochrome, matt gray-green leaf blades on adult specimens are lanceolate, relatively thick, with a rounded or edged upper end and tapering towards the base. The side nerves, which are barely recognizable, extend from the median nerve at a very acute angle. The cotyledons are kidney-shaped.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

A simple inflorescence that contains only three flowers stands on the side of a flattened or angular inflorescence stem with a diameter of up to 3 mm .

The blue-green floured or frosted flower bud is obovate. The hermaphroditic flower is radial symmetry with a double flower envelope and white or cream-colored. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The smooth calyptra is cup-shaped, hemispherical or beak-shaped and as long and as wide as the smooth or ribbed flower cup (hypanthium).

The fruit is spherical or hemispherical. The disc is indented and the fruit compartments are included.

Distribution area

Occurrence

The silver dollar eucalyptus grows in sunny locations on acidic soils , loam soils or sandy loam soils. It occurs exclusively in the south and east of Tasmania, around Hobart, at the foot of Mount Wellington and near the "Prossers Sugarloaf".

Taxonomy

The first description of Eucalyptus cordata was done in 1806 by the French botanist Jacques Labillardière in "Novae Hollandiae Plantarum Specimen", Volume 2, page 13. The type material has the label "in capite Van Diemen" link. The specific epithet cordata is derived from the Latin word cordis for heart and refers to the heart-shaped leaves of young and middle-aged specimens.

There are two subspecies of Eucalyptus cordata :

  • Eucalyptus cordata Labill. subsp. cordata
  • Eucalyptus cordata subsp. quadrangulosa D. Nicolle, BMPotts & McKinnon

There is a natural hybrid of Eucalyptus cordata and Eucalyptus globulus .

use

The silver dollar eucalyptus is used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens.
