The silver crested langur ( Trachypithecus cristatus ) is a primate species from the group of the slender monkeys (Presbytini).
features
Silver crested langurs reach a head body length of 46 to 56 centimeters, the tail is with 63 to 84 centimeters significantly longer than the body. Males are significantly heavier with an average of 6.6 kilograms than females with 5.7 kilograms. The fur of these animals is dark gray in color, the tips of the hair are lighter. The face is black, the head is characterized by a mop of hair like all crested langurs .
distribution and habitat
Silver crested langurs live in Southeast Asia , their distribution area is on Sumatra , Borneo and some offshore islands. The habitat of these animals are forests, where they live in various forest forms, e.g. B. in mangrove forests or the peat bog forests of Borneo occur.
Way of life
These primates are diurnal tree dwellers, they usually move around on four legs. They live together in harem groups that consist of a male, several females and their young animals. The remaining males often live solitary. The groups are territorial and react very aggressively to other groups. Conflicts are carried out with loud screams, if necessary also with blows and bites. Solitary males often attempt to usurp control of a harem group. If they succeed in doing this , infanticide often occurs , which means that the male kills the children of his predecessor in order to be able to produce offspring more quickly himself.
Silver crested langurs are herbivores that feed on leaves, fruits, and seeds. Like all slender monkeys, they have a multi-chambered stomach for better utilization of food.
Reproduction
Mating can take place all year round. After a gestation period of around six months, the female usually gives birth to a single young. As with all crested langurs, this is initially orange and only takes on the color of adults after a few months. Not only the mother, but also the other females in the group look after the young. You carry it around, play and cuddle with it. Sexual maturity occurs at four to five years of age, at which point males have to leave their birth group.
Systematics
There are two subspecies: T. c. vigilans only lives on the Natuna Islands between Borneo and the Malay Peninsula and is a bit darker. T. c. cristatus , the nominate form , lives in the rest of the distribution area. The Selangor langur , a dark gray form from the Malay Peninsula that is very similar to the silver crested langur , was described as a further subspecies in 2008, but has been an independent species since 2013.
Together with the black crested langur , the tenasserim langur and the Indochinese langur , the silver crested langur forms the cristatus group within the genus of the crested langur . The latter two species are sometimes listed as its subspecies.
