Location and origin
The Silbersee is located on the northern edge of the Knüllgebirge at around 240 m above sea level. NHN . The approximately 8.2 hectare body of water was created towards the end of the 1960s when, after 150 years , open-cast lignite mining in the area ceased and the basin was flooded for the purpose of recultivation .
Todays use
The holiday village of the same name, one of the most important tourism projects in the Schwalm-Eder district, was built directly around the lake. The water is used as a bathing lake and as a fishing area with regular fish stocking. The water is currently leased to the SFV Homberg 1939, which carries out restocking measures and also takes care of the bank areas. Since 1998 the area around the Silbersee has also been used by mountain bikers ; Today there is a year-round passable course with routes of varying degrees of difficulty, suitable for professionals and beginners.
Water quality
The water of the Silbersee is regularly checked by the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology and currently has a very good ecological and bathing, leisure and recreational quality. It complies with the quality requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive .
