Silcher (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Silcher is a white wine variety . The similarity of the name has nothing to do with the Schilcher wine. As with the Juwel grape variety, it is a new breed from Kerner × Silvaner . In addition to vineyards in Germany, small stocks in Northern Italy are also known.

The crossing took place in 1951 by August Herold at the State Training and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg , Baden-Württemberg. The grape variety was dedicated to the composer Friedrich Silcher , who lived from 1789 to 1860.

The wine is similar to the Silvaner. Silcher is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
