Silhöfer Aue / Westend
The district of Silhöfer Aue / Westend , often simply called Westend , is the 8th district of the central Hessian city of Wetzlar . The district, with a population of just over 2,600, is located west of the old town and south of the Lahn . The Steindorf district adjoins it in the west .
Description of the district
The Westend was created in the 1930s when the Sixt-von-Armin barracks were built in the Silhöfer Aue . In the 1960s, commercial and residential areas were built around these barracks. After the garrison was dissolved in 1993, the district is in a fundamental structural change.
The Braunfelser Straße as the main thoroughfare crosses the city district in an east-west direction. North of this street are primarily commercial uses , including the headquarters of the camera manufacturer Minox . To the south of the street, in addition to apartment buildings and single-family housing estates , there are now mixed-use areas and large-scale retail .
