Sílvia Lutucuta

Sílvia Paula Lutucuta (* 1969 in Huambo , Angola ) is an Angolan cardiologist , university professor and Minister of Health of Angola since 2017 . She completed her medical degree at the age of 21 and was the youngest and best university graduate in her subject in Angola.

Life

She was born in 1969 in the province of Huambo as the daughter of Gilberto Buta Lutucuta - former Angolan ambassador to the Ivory Coast , Liberia and Equatorial Guinea , before that Minister of Agriculture - and Rebeca Valentim Lutucuta. First she attended primary school in the neighboring province of Bié , then two secondary schools in Huambo, where she also completed her preparatory course in biology.

Lutucuta began studying medicine in 1985 at the age of 16 at the Universidade Agostinho Neto (UAN) in Huambo and graduated in 1990. Because of her particularly good performance, she was offered a scholarship for postgraduate studies at the University Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon , where she specialized in pediatric cardiology . She then trained in echocardiography at Hammersmith Hospital in London . She then worked as a "Post-Doc Research Fellow" at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston , Texas , doing research on cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , atherosclerosis and sickle cell anemia . During this time she published numerous articles in scientific publications and won several science awards, including the one for best researcher in basic science .

Career

Academic

She began teaching in 1990 as a course leader in the department of morphology , chair of histology , at the Universidade Agostinho Neto in Huambo. She then moved to the medical faculty of the Universidade Agostinho Neto (FMUAN) in Luanda . Your study visits abroad also fall during this period.

Politically

Lutucuta was President of the Medical Students Association while studying at UAN in Huambo. On September 28, 2017, she was appointed Minister of Health by decree by President João Lourenço .

criticism

Investigative journalists accuse her of having awarded contracts to private companies worth 525 million Kwanzas as health minister without having carried out the tendering procedure required by law and transferring the invoice amount to the company before the contract was signed. Furthermore, she had come to the World Health Organization meeting in Geneva in May 2018 at state expense with five private individuals, including her sister, and, according to foreign participants, was not present at the meeting but was shopping.
