Silvio Fagiolo
Silvio Fagiolo (born July 15, 1938 in Rome , † June 28, 2011 in Milan ) was an Italian diplomat .
Life
In 1961 he earned a degree in law . Initially he worked for the European Economic Community. In 1969 he joined the Italian diplomatic service and worked from 1972 to 1979 first as second and then first secretary in the Italian embassy in Moscow . Fagiolo also spoke Russian and German . From 1979 to 1982 he worked again in Rome. Further assignments took him from 1982 to 1986 to the embassies in the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn and from 1991 to 1996 in the USA in Washington, DC He was one of the negotiators for the Maastricht and Nice Treaties . Fagiolo was Italy's permanent representative to the European Union from 2000 to 2001 . From February 2001 he was the Italian ambassador to Germany based in Berlin . In September 2005 he became Professor of International Relations at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali in Rome. He also worked for the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore . He died suddenly in Milan at the age of 72.
