etymology

The Hebrew personal name שִׁמְעִי šim'î " Shimei " is a short form of a verb sentence name, the subject (and at the same time theophoric element) has been omitted. The predicate is from the root of the verbשׁמע šm ' , German' to hear 'can be derived. The name can therefore be translated as "(God) has heard". A full form of the name is Schemaya (שְׁמַעְיָה šəma'jāh andשְׁמַעְיָהוּ šəma'jāhû , “ YHWH has heard”). The Septuagint gives the name as Σεμεϊ Semei , the Vulgate as Semei .

Shimei, son of Geras

Shimei, the son of Gera, belonged to the Israelite tribe of Benjamin and the family of Saul . He is described as a resident of Bahurim, who cursed King David and threw stones and clods of earth at him when he flees from Absalom to Bahurim. Contrary to the advice of his people, David lets him go, and when he returns as king and Shimei submits, he guarantees his life ( 2 Sam 16.5–13  EU ; 2 Sam 19.17–24  EU ). On his deathbed, however, David tells his son Solomon not to leave Shimei unpunished. Solomon sends Shimei to Jerusalem and forbids him to leave the city, otherwise he will be executed. Shimei initially promises to adhere to the condition. After three years, however, he breaks the ban and travels to Gat to bring back two runaway slaves. Solomon then calls him over and has him killed. The final verse of the narrative classifies the elimination of Shimis as a dynastic precautionary measure: With Shimei, Solomon eliminated the last descendant of Saul's dynasty who could have claimed the throne, and is now the undisputed king of Israel ( 1 Kings 2,36– 46  EU ).
