The Simmental Zeitung is purely a subscription newspaper and is read in over two thirds of all households in the Simmental (in Obersimmental even in over 95%).
Emergence
The population of the Simmental had long felt the need for a local newspaper . Above all the associations, the local trade, the tourism organizations, but also the communities and agriculture need a platform for information and orientation. There have been several attempts to establish a newspaper in the past.
At the beginning of the nineties in the 19th century, the first editions of the Simmentaler Blatt were published with printing in Zweisimmen . Later editions were also printed in Erlenbach im Simmental and in Wimmis . With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the Simmentaler Blatt was discontinued.
The first issue of Obersimmentaler appeared on December 12, 1936 , but only for a short period. About a year later, on December 4, 1937, the newspaper was stopped again. On June 10, 1970, the first edition of the "second" Obersimmentaler was published. The Obersimmentaler was published continuously every week until the end of February 2009. The Simmental Zeitung is the successor to this (second) Obersimmental newspaper and was first published on March 5, 2009.
Importance of the newspaper for the Simmental
The reason for the name change from Obersimmentaler to Simmental Zeitung was the need of the Niedersimmental for a newspaper "like the 'Obersimmentaler'". The Simmental has a special political situation: It is the only valley in Switzerland (possibly also in Europe) that is politically separated. The districts of Obersimmental and Niedersimmental were merged with the neighboring regions of Frutigen and Saanen as part of the 2010 district reform .
The Simmental newspaper is intended to strengthen unity in the valley and prevent migration to the centers of Frutigen and Saanen / Gstaad . The Simmental Zeitung is independent and politically neutral and serves as the organ for communications from tourism, agriculture, trade, associations and service providers. The newspaper also serves as a platform for the authorities to provide their information.
Content
The newspaper reports mainly from the region or on events that affect people from the Simmental. In addition, events of special significance for the Simmental (also applies to the rest of Switzerland ) from the Bernese Oberland and reports from the Grand Council from the canton of Bern are published.
reader
The readers are connected to the Simmental. These are mainly people who live in the valley. In addition, the newspaper is also read by permanent guests and holiday home owners. Even " homesick " Simmental people and those who have moved away read the newspaper.
