Simms Taback (born February 13, 1932 in Bronx , New York City , New York , † December 25, 2011 in Ventura , California ) was an American illustrator , children's book author , art director and graphic artist .

Life

Born and raised in the Bronx , Taback attended The Cooper Union , a privately operated college in Lower Manhattan, until 1953 . After serving in the US Army , he worked as an art director for CBS Records and the New York Times . He later became Advertising Art Director at William Douglas McAdams . In 1963, Taback founded a design studio together with Reynold Ruffins.

Taback has taught at the School of Visual Arts and Syracuse University . He was founding president of The Illustrators Guild which later became part of the New York Graphic Artists Guild , Taback was a founding member and became president of the same. He was also a member of the Society of Illustrators .

During his career he published more than 40 children's books, most of which he illustrated himself. Many of his books have received accolades, including awards from the American Library Association , the Parents' Choice Gold Awards, and the Sidney Taylor Award . For example, Joseph Had a Little Overcoat won the Caldecott Medal in 2005 . For There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly , one of two books that described the New York Times as bestillustriertes children's book and which by the American Institute of Graphic Arts was selected as a children's book of the year, which received Caldecott Honor .

Taback was married and had three children. Since 2006 he and his wife lived in Ventura, California. There he died of pancreatic cancer on December 25, 2011 at the age of 79 .

Trivia

In 1977, Taback designed the first Happy Meal Box from McDonald’s .
