Simon Mark Arthur, 4th Baron Glenarthur DL , FCILT , FRAeS (born October 7, 1944 ) is a British peer , pilot and businessman. He inherited his father's title in 1976 and is one of the 90 hereditary peers who have a seat in the House of Lords under the House of Lords Act 1999 . He's sitting there for the Conservative Party .

life and career

The son of Matthew Arthur, 3rd Baron Glenarthur went to the elite boarding school Eton . He did his military service from 1963 with the 10th Royal Hussars ; Glenarthur was aide-de-camp for the High Commissioner of Aden from 1964 to 1965 . From 1976 to 1980 he was a major with the Royal Hussars and the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve, and from 1976 to 1982 he was a flight captain with British Airways Helicopters .

Glenarthur was under the government of Margaret Thatcher in the House of Lords, 1982, he was lord-in-waiting ( Whip of the government) and was 1983 Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health and Welfare (Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS)). He moved to the Home Office and became Minister of State for Scotland in 1986. From 1987 to 1989 he was Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. His responsibilities included Hong Kong and UK relations with China.

From 1977 to 1982 was Glenarthur director of Aberdeen and Texas Corporate Finance Ltd. and from 1979 to 1982 the Abtex Computer Systems Ltd . He was CEO of Hanson plc Deputy CEO of Hanson Pacific Ltd. and Director of Whirly Bird Services Ltd . He was also a consultant for British Aerospace and President of the National Council for Civil Protection . For the British Helicopter Advisory Board he was a director and later president. He was also a Director of the Lewis Group Advisors to Chevron UK Ltd and a Director of Millennium Chemicals . He also worked for Hanson plc and the Imperial Tobacco Group plc . He was a board member of the European Helicopter Association and the International Federation of Helicopter Associations . He was a consultant for Audax Trading Ltd . He was Commissioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Director of the Medical Defense Union and Andax Global .

He served on The Air League and served on the National Employers Liaison Committee of Her Majesty's Reserve Forces . He was also Chairman of the National Employer Advisory Board for Britain's Reserve Forces . He is a Lieutenant in the Royal Company of Archers , and Honorary Colonel of 306 Field Hospital and Honorary Air Commodore of 612 (County of Aberdeen) Squadron , Royal Auxiliary Air Force . In 1992 Glenarthur Freeman became the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators and in 1996 he became Liveryman . He had been a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport since 1978 and became a fellow in 1999 . He is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and since 1996 Freeman of the City of London .

Glenarthur is married to Susan Barry, a granddaughter of the Earl of Dunmore ; they have a son and a daughter.
