Simon Denis Brown, Baron Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood , PC , QC (born April 9, 1937 ) is a British attorney and former judge of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom .

life and career

Simon Brown was born on April 9, 1937 to Denis Baer Brown († 1981) and Edna Elizabeth Abrahams. He attended the Stowe School in Buckingham .

From 1955 to 1957 he did his military service in the Royal Artillery , where he reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from Worcester College of the University of Oxford , where he met with a Bachelor of Arts graduated and was founded in 1961 by the Bar Association Temple Middle admitted. He received a Harmsworth Scholarship. From 1979 to 1984 he was the Common Law Recorder and First Junior Treasury Counsel . In 1980 he was Master of the Bench at Middle Temple. He was appointed Judge of the High Court of Justice in 1984 and assigned to the Queen's Bench Division . Upon his appointment, he was also beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree . He became Lord Justice of Appeal , a judge on the Court of Appeal of England and Wales , in 1992 and a member of the Privy Council that same year . From 2001 to 2003 he was Vice-President ( Vice-President ) of the Civil Division .

Membership in the House of Lords

On January 13, 2004, Brown became Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and Life Peer, with the title Baron Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood, of Eaton-under-Heywood in the County of Shropshire . On June 8, 2006, he gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on fundamental rights. There he sat initially as a crossbencher. Currently (May 2012) he is listed as an Independent ( Non-Affiliated ).

On July 30, 2009, Brown and the rest of the Law Lords met for the last time before the official formation of the Supreme Court and considered the case of IM Litigation Funding .

Brown and nine other Lords of Appeal in Ordinary became Judges of the Supreme Court, which was established on the same day, on October 1, 2009. Since that day he has been excluded from serving in the House of Lords for the duration of his term.

In October 2011, Minister Theresa May campaigned for a law to prevent the immigration of non-European spouses. In contrast to his colleagues at the Supreme Court, Brown spoke out in favor and justified this with the prevention of forced marriage.

Virtue of his office he had contacts with intelligence services and was president of the Security Service Tribunal from 1989 to 2000 and the Intelligence Services Tribunal from 1995 to 2000, as well as Intelligence Services Commissioner from 2000 to 2006. He was chairman of addition ( Chairman ) of the Sub-Committee E (law and institutions) of the House of Lords European Select Committee . His term ended on April 12, 2012.

In May 2012 he took part in the event The Supreme Court comes to Belfast at Queen's University Belfast .

The last time he spoke up was at a meeting on June 8, 2006. Brown's attendance ranged from 5 to 43 days over the six session periods. He has been taking part in votes regularly since November 2012.

Honors

He is the Liveryman of the Butchers' Company . In 1992 he became a member of the Privy Council . The following year he became an Honorary Fellow of Worcester College . Brown is also an honorary member of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS).

family

Brown has been married to Jennifer Buddicom, daughter of Robert Prosper Gedye Buddicom, since May 31, 1963. They have two sons and a daughter.
